CLICHÉ ALERT: I have good news and bad news.
First, the good: I have a new job title here at The Times. Starting Monday, I will be the Social Media Editor. Before you start asking the inevitable questions (“That means you’re the society writer, right?”), check out the end of this blog post for my job description. Unfortunately, this exciting opportunity (promotion, to some degree), comes with a tiny problem: I have to change the name of my blog. I can’t call it “Night Owl: Thoughts from a crime reporter” when I’m not longer a crime reporter. Sigh.
So this is where I need your help. What should I call my blog, based on my new responsibilities? I’m considering this tag line: “Personal and professional musings of a new media journalist.” So what replaces “Night Owl”? I don’t want to be too specific because, let’s be honest, I’m too ADD to write only about one topic. I need something catchy, something descriptive … yeah, this is why I don’t write headlines.
Leave a comment with suggestions. I can’t promise I’ll use your idea, BUT, if I do, I’ll buy you a pizza and have it delivered to your house. Come on, how’s that for an incentive? Just make sure you enter a valid e-mail address when you comment (it won’t be shown on my site) so I can make arrangements for your pizza.
Here’s the rough form of my job description that was sent out in the big announcement e-mail:
Social Media Editor: Niki Doyle will take on this new position, and she will lead a group of folks in the newsroom who will be charged with improving our Web presence. Niki has done a tremendous job as our public safety reporter. She has strong news judgment, produces quality work with little supervision and has shown a desire to be a leader in the newsroom. Niki will be our early-morning editor, updating the Web site and working with/deploying reporters to breaking news that needs immediate coverage. She will also run an early Law&Order check and file items to the web accordingly. Most importantly, Niki will oversee training of everyone in the newsroom for their Web-related responsibility. She will help you come up with a regular presence online, and will track your progress (number of posts, number of photo galleries, etc.). Taking over Niki’s night duties with Law&Order will be Kim Albright. Niki will transition into her role beginning March 30.

NetOwl?
Oh man, that is too bad that I am not with al.com anymore. I used to do everything for Bham News and HTimes. I’m sure I would love working with you.
As for a blog title…..yeah, I’m stumped.
Congrats! And by the way, this is unfair. You posted this when I was in London all weekend so I never got a chance to weigh in for free pizza.
But I forgive you.
