This story chronicles the lives of Antwan Green and Fredrick Thomas Jr. after Green’s father allegedly stabbed the two boys to death. Dozens of friends, family members and teachers spoke at the joint funeral. Unlike many funerals, this one was fraught with anger and confusion.

I struggled when I wrote this story. During the first part of the funeral, Fredrick’s father wailed loudly and refused to let go of his son’s casket. I considering including this detail in the story, but decided it was too personal. Since other family members also clung to the boy’s casket, I wrote that instead of singling out Fredrick’s father.
